Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures as I travel around the UK and in Europe

Peterborough Cathedral

Peterborough Cathedral

Before visiting it, I only knew one thing about Peterborough, that it was the burial place of both Catherine of Aragon and the initial burial place of Mary Queen of Scots. Thanks, History O-Level.

Peterborough was created a city by Henry VIII in 1541 when the former Abbey Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew became the cathedral. Almost 900 years before in 655, the first monastery was founded at the site. Like most Abbey churches, it’s been knocked about a bit and rebuilt. It’s also said to have been destroyed by Vikings in the 9th century, attacked by Hereward the wake and used by King John as a base for his operations when attacking his enemies in the area.

I was very impressed with Peterborough, the sun was shining; which makes everything look better. The city centre itself is quite small but very well designed capped off by the entrance to the cathedral. I did have problems with a credit card while there but even having to deal with an inefficient bank couldn’t spoil a very enjoyable day.

Here are some pictures of the cathedral.

And now for something completely different . . .
