Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures as I travel around the UK and in Europe

Chelmsford Cathedral

Chelmsford Cathedral

Chelmsford , like most of the Cathedral cities I’m visiting, is somewhere that I’d never been to before. I’d always thought of it as a just a commuter town. I was very pleasently surprised not just with the Cathedral but the town itself. There’s a little river walk along the Can, decent shopping center, resturants (mostly chain) and an indoor market. I’m sure that there’s more than I didn’t see.

The walk down from the train station to the Cathedral doesn’t show off the town at its best but it’s a short walk.

The Cathedral is very small but lovely. Work on it began around 1200 with some major renovations in the 19th century when the Nave partially collaspsed. It didn’t become a Cathedral until 1913.

The Cathedral has some very good stained glass and has some decorations that are very similiar to the icons in Greek and Russian Orthodox churches.

Here are a few photos of the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin, St Peter and St Cedd.
